Ball Screw Troubleshooting — Noise, Accuracy Loss, Overheating

A symptom / cause / remedy table for ball-screw feed axes: abnormal noise, lost accuracy, sticking, overheating and rust, plus when to check the support bearing.

1. Symptom / cause / remedy

SymptomPossible causeCheck & remedy
Noise / abnormal soundpoor lubrication, contamination in the circuit, over-preload, damaged support bearingre-lubricate, clean & shield, re-check preload, replace bearing
Lost accuracy / increased backlashnut preload loosened, screw worn, support bearing clearance, coupling loosere-tighten lock nut, check support unit, re-align coupling
Sticking / crawlingrail-screw parallelism out of tolerance, poor lube, overload beyond Care-check parallelism, improve lubrication, verify load
Overheatingover-preload, speed over DN limit, lube failurereduce preload, control speed, use high-temp grease
Rust / pittinghigh humidity, coolant ingress, no anti-rust careadd telescopic cover, stainless/coated screw, periodic anti-rust

2. First checks

  1. Confirm lubrication interval (re-grease every 500–1000 running hours).
  2. Re-tighten the lock nut to the reference torque (see the torque guide).
  3. Check screw-to-rail parallelism and coupling concentricity.
  4. Inspect the support bearing for noise and play.
