Ball Screw Model Code — All 13 Fields Decoded

How to read a ball screw part number: all 13 fields of the MOSIONX code decoded — nut type, thread direction, shaft diameter, lead, ball turns, flange, process, accuracy grade, shaft length, preload, surface treatment — with nine worked examples and the full series cross-reference.

Two screws that look identical can differ by a single character in the code — and that character changes lead, ball turns or preload. The breakdown below follows the MOSIONX catalogue, so you can read any part number yourself and order against it directly.

1. Code structure at a glance

A complete catalogue code carries 13 fields. Example:

SFU R 025 05 T4 D G C5 - 600 - P1 - B2 + N3 N3

FAQ

What if the code does not state an accuracy grade?
It defaults to C5 for ground screws and C7 for rolled screws. If positioning accuracy matters, write C3 or C5 into the code explicitly — otherwise the part ships as standard and the grade cannot be traced afterwards.
What is the difference between 2.8 and 4 ball turns?
Ball turns set the number of load-carrying circuits: more turns raise the dynamic load rating Ca and stiffness, but lengthen the nut. At the same Ø16 × 5 mm, 4 turns gives a markedly higher Ca than 2.8 turns.
How do I choose between P0 and P1 preload?
P0 has axial clearance and suits pure transmission with no positioning requirement. Move to P1 or above when backlash must be removed. Higher preload raises stiffness but also heat and torque — P4 is reserved for heavy cutting.
